Have a specific question about the transition? Check out our FAQ section for answers to common questions about timelines, hardware accessories, and software alternatives.
Q: Will someone from the technology team assist me in transferring my documents from the Windows computer to Apple?
A: The tech team will not be able to assist with transferring your files to the Apple computer, especially given the high number of users. Please refer to our "Getting Ready" section for the best methods to transfer the files.
Q: Will my current external monitor, mouse, and keyboard still work?
A: Most likely, yes. Standard Bluetooth mice and keyboards will connect easily to your new Mac. However, modern Macs primarily use USB-C ports.
If your current mouse or keyboard uses an older, rectangular USB-A plug (the traditional USB shape), you may need a small adapter or a new Bluetooth keyboad and mouse. Please check with the tech team regarding docking stations and adapters for your desk setup!
Q: What happens if I use an application that only works on Windows?
A: Most of our daily applications are web-based or have excellent Mac equivalent. If your role requires specialized software that is strictly Windows-only, please submit a ticket as soon as possible.
Q: When do I have to turn in my old Windows Laptop?
A: You will need to hand in your Windows device on the day that you pick up your new Mac. Please ensure all your files are fully backed up (Please refer to our "Getting Ready" section for the best methods to transfer the files) before hand. You will not be able to keep the Windows device for any reason.
Q: I turned in my Windows laptop, but I forgot a file on the Desktop! Is it gone?
A: Yes. Please ensure all your files are fully backed up (Please refer to our "Getting Ready" section for the best methods to transfer the files) before turning in your Windows PC for the Mac.
Q: Where did my Windows "Sticky Notes" go?
A: The Windows "Sticky Notes" application does not have a direct Mac equivalent. If you use this app, please make a copy of your notes to Google Docs before turning in your Windows device. Once you are on your Mac, you can use the built-in Apple "Notes" or "Stickies" app.
Q: I keep trying to close an app, but it is still running. Why?
A: On a Mac, clicking the red circle in the top left corner only closes the window, not the program itself. To fully close the application, press Command (⌘) + Q (Quit).
Q: Where is the Start Menu?
A: Mac uses the Dock (bottom, for applications and files) and the Menu Bar (top).
Q: Can the Windows computer be donated or purchase from KIPP NYC?
A: No. While we appreciate the desire to give these devices a second life, KIPP NYC will not be able to sell or gift Windows laptops to staff members.
